Hip Hop Gospel? I don't know, but somehow the combination never really occurred to me. But here it is. Gospel Hip Hop. Or, as others have called it, "thuggin' in the name of Jesus". J Prophet is from Connecticut and he's also a Yale Divinity student. So I'm pretty sure he knows his Gospel, but his Hip Hop might be suspect. I mean, are there really mean streets in Connecticut? Alright, to be fair, he's originally from Cleveland. "Merry Christmas To You" is alright--fair to middling. Nothing essential. But its free at Bandcamp, if you're interested.

Every year about this time, the Internet "magazine" Soul Tracks gifts it's readers some wonderful holiday music. This year's set includes "Jingle Bells" by Take 6, "This Christmas" from Kirk Wahlum, Wendy Moten's "Silent Night" and this track from rising star Erin Barra. Erin is a Neo-Soul and Rock singer, very unique, very passionate, very inventive, very soulful and very talented. I think she's got a future in this business. Near as I can tell, Erin's version of "The Christmas Song" is exclusive to Soul Tracks. Visit Erin's web site to learn and hear more (you can even exchange your email for a non-holiday download, "Satisfied"). And, by all means, don't forget to grab the rest of the holiday cheer offered up at Soul Tracks. I don't stop by there every day, but I do stop by on a regular basis. 1. Happy Holidays Kragenoff 2. Kev Brown is, more or less, the leader of the group and they've been doing there thing for pretty close to a decade, if not longer. Early in the oughts, they released several popular 12" including Kev Brown's "Nightfall". Then came a few full length albums and, of late, its mostly been Internet distribution. But the Low Budget Crew continues, last year releasing a very popular Christmas EP. This year, they follow up with a full length Christmas record featuring the beatflips of Kev Brown, RoddyRod and Oddisee, among others. The crew doesn't really spend much time on their web site; they just kinda let the news drop on their Twitter feed. So, if you're looking for some cutting edge Hip Hop grooves this Christmas, download it here or hit the link on Kev Brown's Blog. Most of the talk has been about the wicked collaboration of Wavves and Best Coast, but Little Jackie's spicy R&B groove should not be overlooked. Guster's been around for a while and the last time we heard from Little Isadore was when he sang "Christmas Of Love" for the Grinch soundtrack. A winning collection from start to finish that you can stream or download. Free! 13 tracks in all--one for each of the 12 days of Christmas and one more for good measure. Don't miss "The Christmas Gig". American R&B singer Chris Brown stays busy between major label releases making up Mix Tapes with a little help from his Hip Hop friends. His latest, "In My Zone 2", is available for free and without sign-up at Live Mix Tapes. Burried in the middle of the thing is a new Christmas joint, "Christmas Came Today" (featuring Seven) which (though it's only 2:12 in length) seems to have the spark of life that I, for one, felt was missing from his version of "This Christmas" released in 2007. Chris will be touring and has a major album release scheduled for 2011. You can download "Christmas Came Today" by itself, or the whole mix tape if you prefer, free at Live Mix Tapes. Your Love Is Like Christmas/Dukes Of Daville The Dukes of Deville are a pair of Hip-Hop artists out of Atlanta. Their music has appeared on television and in motion pictures and, for a while, they had a development deal with Capital Records. Back on the Indie scene since 2009, The Dukes have released a pair of MixTapes and, in September, The Next Big Nashville Sampler. "Your Love Is Like Christmas" features rapper Fire Red and was included on last year's Dukems & Fire Red holiday MixTape Merry Kushmas. The Dukes of Deville are putting it out there, free on Bandcamp this year, in the seasonal spirit and in hopes of interesting you in the rest of their catalog. It's not a bad selection, sampling Spandau Ballet's "True", and there isn't a whole lot of Christmas Hip-Hop that doesn't require a lot of bleeping, so...if you dig it, stop by Bandcamp and pick it up. |
The FREE ListHere we hope to direct you to some of the Christmas music on the web that can be yours absolutely free. We will not direct you to mp3 or sharity sites, here, but only to artist sites, label sites, and other authorized and unquestionably legal locations. ArchivesDecember 22-31, 2010 Categories
