Every year about this time, the Internet "magazine" Soul Tracks gifts it's readers some wonderful holiday music. This year's set includes "Jingle Bells" by Take 6, "This Christmas" from Kirk Wahlum, Wendy Moten's "Silent Night" and this track from rising star Erin Barra. Erin is a Neo-Soul and Rock singer, very unique, very passionate, very inventive, very soulful and very talented. I think she's got a future in this business. Near as I can tell, Erin's version of "The Christmas Song" is exclusive to Soul Tracks. Visit Erin's web site to learn and hear more (you can even exchange your email for a non-holiday download, "Satisfied"). And, by all means, don't forget to grab the rest of the holiday cheer offered up at Soul Tracks. I don't stop by there every day, but I do stop by on a regular basis.

So I'm putting it right up. The traditional stuff is, well, too traditional for some people, and the Indie stuff can be, you know, too Indie for others. This seemed to find a happy meeting point somewhere in the middle. Anyway, I thought so. Disagree if you like, but the sign says "Stubby's House", right?
Originally from America's heartland, Amani Starnes is an LA based singer/songwriter. She describes herself as a Soul singer and so I went over to iTunes to check out her debut EP, "Match Play", and, sure enough, she's got some serious Soul. Where's Don Cornelius when you need him? I thought "Mistletoe & Holly" was a bit more of a fun Indie Pop/Rock groove than a straight soul take. And there ain't nothing at all wrong with that. Whatever you want to call it, I dig it. Visit Amani at her web site and download the mp3 of "Mistletoe & Holly" for free. She'll link you up. American R&B singer Chris Brown stays busy between major label releases making up Mix Tapes with a little help from his Hip Hop friends. His latest, "In My Zone 2", is available for free and without sign-up at Live Mix Tapes. Burried in the middle of the thing is a new Christmas joint, "Christmas Came Today" (featuring Seven) which (though it's only 2:12 in length) seems to have the spark of life that I, for one, felt was missing from his version of "This Christmas" released in 2007. Chris will be touring and has a major album release scheduled for 2011. You can download "Christmas Came Today" by itself, or the whole mix tape if you prefer, free at Live Mix Tapes. |
