I don't really know anything about Lesley Jorgensen (or her friends). It appears her father was a songwriter and she discovered relatively late in life (in 2011) that she had a knack for writing songs as well. Whatever. I just think this video for "The Best Bloody Christmas" is bloody delightful is all. Truly. Haters gonna hate, but this makes me smile. And that's bloody worth something. You can download the song for free from ReverbNation or bloody Bandcamp. (One for the road....Bloody!)

Kitty Don’t Eat That Tinsel (Bonus Beats) DOWNLOAD AT BANDCAMP DOWNLOAD VIA FACEBOOK I've never been a big fan of Christmas novelty records. The very word "novelty" implies that the goof factor is going to wear off right quick. But I know others embrace the genre with both arms. So don't say I never gave you nothin'.
"Regifted" is a collection of the assorted Christmas novelty tunes issued from 2008-2013 by Peroxide Mocha, a Synth Pop duo (Rachel Picard and Pete Ellison) from Washington state. Here you'll find Christmas songs about fake blood and peppermint everything and the fear of peeing on Santa's lap (it's a long line, yo). Doctor Demento fodder for sure. While I'm not a fan of the goof record, I do have to admit that "Kitty Don't Eat That Tinsel" had me laughing out loud. Mrs. Katz (not her real name), however, was not amused. "Regifted" is a free instant download on Bandcamp. Or you can grab a handy zip file at the Peroxide Mocha Facebook site. It was bound to happen. We've had "Santa Baby", "Santa Buddy", and "Hanukkah Honey". Finally, someone has given us "Krampus Baby". Krampus is sort of the anti_santa Claus. You know, if you've been good, Santa gives you toys. But Krampus comes and drags the bad little boys and girls deep into the forest (presumably eating them?). Our friends at Lie In The Sound had a whole gathering of Krampus tunes last year. In this song from Portland's Times Infinity, the singer is pleading with Krampus to take his/her sister instead. She's the bad seed after all. And, "next year, with your hooks and your claws, perhaps you'll take an interest in Ma and Pa." It's slyly funny like that throughout. By the way, the big day for Krampus is December 5th. So, if you're reading this, you should be safe for another year. "Krampus Baby" purports to be from Volume 2 of "A Festive Odyssey" but, as yet, its the only song listed. However, that shouldn't stop you from picking up Volume One, which is also free at Bandcamp. In the style of Woody Guthrie's talking blues, a style which many an artist has found creative license, Diamond David Lee Roth does the holidays in just over two minutes flat. It may not be the star of your holiday party today. But its odd enough that, five years from now, people are going to ask about it. So you might as well download it, now, so you'll have it then. And, right now, "Talkin' Christmas Blues" is free on Soundcloud.

Working, this year, with Ne Pas de Machine (which are pretty much the same dudes from The Left Handed Orchestra), "For Whom The Sleighbell Tolls" is their sixth holiday release. There's an "Elvis Shaped Snowman" and "Reindeers" in the house; I want to party with these dudes. This record is laid out like a split, with NPDM taking the odd numbered tracks and TBFH on the evens, but my guess is there's a lot of cross pollination (so to speak). My personal favorites are "Jolasveiner" and "Artificial Tree", but, by now, you know to expect some of the quirkiest Indie Pop and Rock in the universe. Ask not "For Whom The Sleighbell Tolls", it tolls for anyone and everyone...straight out of Holland and ready to stuff your stocking. Dig in.

Selaphobia DOWNLOAD AT BANDCAMP One of the things I really missed last year, not being around much, was the annual treat from That Band From Holland & The Left Handed Orchestra. I did include them in my Christmas link dump, last year, but we didn't get a chance to chat about it. And I didn't get a chance to really listen to it, fairly.
I don't know how TBFH & TLHO manage to come up with such a delightful assortment of completely original Indie Pop Christmas music every year, but I'm sure glad they do. The 2013 installment, "Mind Your Own Christmas", is among their best ever (guys, you know you have to top yourselves again this year, right?). It's a cold rainy day, here in the Carolinas, and I can think of few better things to listen to on such a day than this Christmas collection--their fifth (IIRC). Who else but That Band From Holland & The Left Handed Orchestra would think to explore the holiday through the eyes of one of those silly boxed up "Singing Santa" things? (My father used to love those things; I find them a little creepy). Who else would write a Christmas song about "Siamese Lumberjacks"? Who else would invite you to experience the magic of a "Sleighbell Museum"? Much like the "Sleighbell Museum", the admission, here, is free ("for almost everyone"). Delightful AND free? Pick it up, if you haven't already. And, if we've all been very good boys and girls this year, there should be an all new present coming. Almost any day, now. We'll start off the 2014 Free List with a nice pop single. Indeed, it's "The Perfect Christmas Single". I know it is, cause it says so. Scott Mills, if you don't know (and, unless you reside in Great Britain, you probably don't) is a DJ on a morning zoo type program (in the afternoon) on BBC Radio 1. And the write up for this one says he's always wanted to make the perfect Christmas single. So, obviously, you've got to start somewhere. Singing lessons? Nah, why bother? Start with a title. Hey, I know. Start with confidence. We'll call it..."The Perfect Christmas Single". Good start. Now what? I suppose we've got to write the bloody thing, don't we? So they made it a bit of a double entendre--the Christmas single is single you, not a record--get it, mate? Oi Oi. Start with a pop culture reference--"status update", got it! Make it sad and happy at the same time, because all the classic Christmas songs are. Throw in a bit of that cheeky British humor. Reference other Christmas songs everybody already knows. And create a whole new original fantabulous word for the catchy chorus. What about fantabulous? Blast, it's not original--a bit hackneyed at this point I'd have to say. I've got it! FRANKINSENSATIONAL! So we're done, here, right? Bloody 'ell, we've got to record it? Well, how hard can that be? We need lots of bells and such, of course, and a kitchen sink I think. Oy, can anybody here sing? So Scott and his radio team, Beccy Huxtable and Chris Stark, enlisted the aid of Frisky & Mannish, one of Britain's most renowned counterculture pop music comedy cabaret duos (it was actually they, technically, who did most of the writing, too). And, remarkably, its actually quite good. Lot's of fun. Distribution? Oh, sod off, just make it a free download already. And so they did. It was downloaded some 170,000 times in the 2012 season which, but for the involvement of the BBC, would've made "The Perfect Christmas Single" a contender for that year's Christmas #1. Sorry we're a couple of years late to the party but, thankfully, you can still download the song free (at least with certain browsers). So march on over and grab it direct from BBC 1. It's FRANKINSENSATIONAL. |
