Not sure how long this one's going to be free, so get it while it is. Vitne Eveille is an Indie Rocker from Norway. Usually, Indie Rock--especially from Scandanavia--is something you can't imagine being on mainstream Rock radio. But, while "Winter Love Song" has all the earmarks of an Indie Rock track, it also embraces Eighties Rock. College radio, commercial radio, heck, Top 40 even--"Winter Love Song" sounds as though it would fit right in. I'd play it. I think I just did. Head to Bandcamp and see if its still free by the end of the day.

When I'm putting a mix together, I want different sounds. So, sometimes, that's what I'm listening for--as opposed to listening for a breakout hit (for lack of a better term). There are a lot of Producer/DJ types that put together synth soundscapes--so many that its hard for them to stand out. But, if I think one sufficiently conveys a Christmas mood and it doesn't become annoying after repeated listens, I'll say to myself, "Yeah, I could do something with that". Sometimes, not only is that enough, but its exactly what's needed.
Mymaren is a Producer/DJ from Norway and "Happy Christmas" is his holiday soundscape. I'm inclined to call this Ambient. It's very pretty and it conveys a certain Christmas-ness. And, yeah, I could do something with this. And I probably will. ;^) Even in the "off season", my friends at Lie In The Sound provide me with some of the best Christmas music on the web. And this particular delicious nugget is from Thea and The Wild. Thea and The Wild is actually a group name for the solo projects of Thea Glenton Raknes, a young Norwegian singer and songwriter. From 2007-2011, Thea fronted the band Norma Sass. When that group split up, Thea decided to go it alone. While Norma Sass was a rock group, Thea and The Wild is more of an Alt Pop deal. That sometimes happens when you strip away a full band from a gifted songwriter. Not that Thea doesn't do "upbeat" anymore--one only has to listen to "Hots For You" from her 2014 solo debut "Strangers And Lovers"--but her up tempo stuff is still more Alt Pop (hook driven, catchy and melodic) than Rock. Thea's lyrics tend toward the dark--she says that's because her music derives from internal conflict--but the songs remain catchy and often danceable. "This Christmas", itself, is about as far from the Donny Hathaway staple of the same name as you could get. Its a reflective song about being alone at Christmas, thinking about your other half. Its one of those songs asking the musical question, "Why don't you come back for Christmas because being alone together is so much more bearable than being alone...alone?" As if to emphasize the solitude, the track is just drenched in reverb (I was amused that one of the tags for the tune was "#reverb"); it almost sounds as though it were recorded in an otherwise empty cathedral. "This Christmas" will introduce you to a truly talented young artist half a world away. If you're anything like me, you'll be compelled to seek out Thea's other recordings. Remember to visit Thea and The Wild at their (her) Internet home. Click on the downward arrow up top on the right to download "This Christmas" free or head straight to the source on Soundcloud. |
