Rising young Jazz singer Jose James first posted "The Christmas Song" in 2010. It was mentioned by our good friends at Christmas A Go Go and by the King of Jingaling over at FaLaLaLaLa.com at the time (I keep telling you that man does not live by Stubbys alone). But I'm pretty sure we didn't mention it here since, at the time, it was neither a free download nor available for purchase. Silly me, I didn't check back this year and, as it turns out, James posted the track as a free download a few days before Christmas. So, while it lasts, head to Jose James web site or use the Soundcloud widget above (click on the downward arrow on the right) and grab this super cool and special rendition of "The Christmas Song" from Jose James. The track also features Jazz and Blues legend Junior Mance on the eighty-eights. How cool is that?

What can I say? I love the Blues. Dave Boyd is an artist from Gainesville, Georgia. He plays that countrified folk blues kinda thing. Dave's "Christmas Morning Blues" is a track from his latest album "Dave Boyd & The Shade Tree Smugglers". Not sure where you can get hard copy CDs, though I know he's got some. The digital version can be had through Amazon, iTunes and eMusic (to name a few). And you can follow Dave on Facebook or Reverbnation. The Christmas track can be had for just a Tweet or a Facebook post. Go here and do what you gotta do. Radio station KDHX in St. Louis brought in a lot of artists in a wide range of genres to perform live in their studios. This Holiday Sampler is the result. Half the tracks can be downloaded free, the other half are streamable. Pressed as we are this late, I've not had a fair chance to listen, but I sampled a bit and highly recommend Scarlet Tanager's "Ring Ring Ring" and "Jingle Bells" by The Civil Tones--both downloadable. And I'm a big fan of anything from Brave Combo...especially "Must Be Santa" (sadly, not downloadable). Use the widget below or head to the KDHX website. Cover art is here. 1. It's That Time Of Year 2. Merry Christmas Baby 3. It's Christmas Time 4. This Christmas DOWNLOAD FREE AT BANDCAMP Saw this one up at Mistletunes and couldn't wait to bring it over here. If the Soul is grooving the way it used to, then it's most likely coming from one of two places--either Dap-Tone records or Tre Williams. Tre is a Soul and R&B singer that ought to get more attention than he does, because he is the real deal. And Tre and The Revelations have just dropped an awesome 4 track freebie, named after their previous Christmas treat, "It's That Time Of Year". You betcha I believe in Santa Claus. Williams could hold his own with most of the greats of years gone past and certainly with the wannabes that populate the Soul charts these days. "It's That Time Of Year"--the single--was originally released in 2008. And, for that track alone, you should download this set. But wait! There's more! The Revelations turn in one of the hottest, grittiest versions of "Merry Christmas Baby" I've ever heard. Tre and Company then turn in a deep soul ballad, "It's Christmas Time", which figures to be an original, and close it out with a fairly faithful cover of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas". Funk up your holidays with The Revelations featuring Tre Williams. But don't stop there. You can't, you can't, you can't stop this. On the right hand side of the Bandcamp page, you'll notice a FREE sampler, "An Introduction To..."--that's 9 more slices of soul heaven right there. The only catch is, after that, you'll be wanting even more. Might I recommend "Concrete Blues"? What the heck, you're already there. If nothing else, though, take advantage of the free Christmas gift that is "It's That Time Of Year". Think of it as Soul to feed your soul. Free Jazz yesterday. Free Blues today. Life is good. True enough, it's bar band Blues Rock and, true enough, it's several years old. But its got horns and a mean harmonica and its free. And, hey, video. Sorta. Life is good. "Santa's Back" comes to us from the pride of Rhode Island, J. Slick & The Funk Munks. I thought I'd tracked this tune back to 2003, but it actually goes allllll the way back to 1991. J. Slick appears to have had a few self-issued albums that never found their way to Amazon or CD Baby or iTunes. It does appear that J. Slick has an awful lot of music you can download freely at Last FM...including this funky Christmas record (part of the "Slick's Picks" collection). I'll take it, thank you very much. Download "Santa's Back" free at Last FM. And, if that don't work for ya, try AcidPlanet. And, oh yeah, you can download it from his ReverbNation web site too. I'm not big on the goofy. Goofy has a short shelf life. But sometimes something is actually pretty darn good and just sounds goofy. That's where I'd put this track from the inimitable Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. As one manufacturer of preserves says, "with a name like that, it has to be good". Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band are an Indiana trio specializing in country blues (their latest, "Peyton on Patton", is a tribute to old time Blues great Charlie Patton). Reverend Peyton plays the guitar, his wife Breezy handles the washboard, and Aaron "Cuz" Persinger is the drummer for the unconventional outfit. They're always knocking 'em dead with their live shows (over 250 dates a year) and their records are pretty popular as well. Lasy year, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band wrote and recorded a Christmas song to reflect these troubled times. "Plasma For Christmas" is just what you'd expect, subject wise. How else you gonna raise money to buy Christmas presents? But musically, the song's definitely a bit of a stroll off the beaten path. It has a bit of a stripped down Canned Heat feel to it, I think. And you know you want it for your mixtapes. So grab it while you still can using the widget above (remember it's from last year and could go away at any time) and stop by the Big Damn Band web site and say "howdy" sometime. |
