Saw this on Christmas A Go Go a while back. They had it in with some other funk singles from Bandcamp. But this wasn't the kind of funk I was expecting. I suppose I should've taken the clue from the name Rage Against The Manger (obviously a play on Rage Against The Machine). This is Rap Metal, and Rap Metal Christmas songs are just cool! Not that I can think of another one off the top of my head. And not just Rap Metal...but Rap Metal Parody! I don't know anything about the band, though the page is tagged Hershey. Could be Pennsylvania. Could be chocolate. But they're damn good at this. With lyrics like "Jesus Was Born So We Could Shop For Life" and with a nod to Chanukah and Kwanzaa too, I hope they'll be back around with more Anti-holiday cheer next Christmas. "Christmas In The Name" is just one song on an 8 song eponymous EP. Having waited on this one a bit too long, the band has run out of credits for free downloads from Bandcamp. But have no fear, you can download the EP free through megaupload.

The Funny Music Project is the spot where many an aspiring Weird Al Yankovic put their latest wares on display for all the other aspiring Weird Al Yankovics to either admire or mock. After they've been up for a while, FuMP slaps a price tag on them. The best of them get collected up and pressed to CD for sale in the Funny Music Project web store. It's actually a lot better than it sounds. Anyway, I like to stop by once or twice a year to see if anyone is taking on the holidays. This year brought a double treat (think of it as a 2 sided holiday single). The Christmas side from The Camryn Manheim Steamroller is "Reindeer Direction" sung to the tune of Kermit The Frog's "Rainbow Connection". The Thanksgiving flip side is "Butterball", done to the tune of "Pinball Wizard". Stop by the Funny Music Project and download them both free. You should also be able to find them (as well as a few more I didn't think were as well done) at the Internet Archives--"Butterball" here and "Reindeer Direction" here. Sadly, there was no cover art, forcing me to create the image you see here. I hate when that happens. What are some of the worst things you can imagine? Gross things, scary things, sad things, yucky things. Make a list (check it twice). Now put it all to the tune of "Deck The Halls" and you have a soon to be anti-holiday classic. We've talked a bit about Massachusetts folkie Erin McKeown's unique take on the Christmas season, "F*#@ That". Erin is giving away a free download of one of the album's tracks (a clean one), so you can share in the fun. To get your download of "Fa La La La", enter your email address in the widget above and before you can say "What the--", a bright and shiny download link will appear in your email in-box. I'm not entirely sure people at your next Christmas party will be singing along to: "Noxious odors, Right Wing pundits, great white shark, homeless man" but it's worth a shot. The best part is when Erin switches things up and starts tossing in items from the "nice" list. Your brain experiences a bit of association whiplash--"Wait...is a 'pile of presents' a good thing or a bad one?" Oh, that Erin. She's such a kidder. I think it's pretty well established that I'm not a big fan of "goof". But this one was kinda funny and I can see the mixtapers loving it. Didn't catch any bad words when I listened (can't promise they aren't there--things do sometimes slip past me). And, anyway, it's free...at least for a week. A.P.T. is striving to be the Weird Al Yankovic of R&B and Rap. He bills himself as the Prince of Parody. "Christmas In Paris" is a parody of Jay-Z and Kanye's "Ni****s In Paris". It's already up on iTunes. But, for the week, A.P.T. promises this one will be free through his web site (you'll find the link directly below the video there). So check it on the vid and then go get it. It's there for you to be had. |
