Napolean IIIrd is James Mabbett, formerly of Little Japanese Toy. Mabbett records his experimental music for London DIY label Brainlove. Since coming to Brainlove, Mabbett's music has been an interesting, and seemingly contradictory, confluence of Lo-Fi and extremely complex layering of sounds. It's all DIY--stuff he cooks up in his own studio, often with a 40 year old reel-to-reel player. Napolean IIIrd, who won't be finished with his next album until 2013, has given a techno dance beat to "Deck The Halls" and combined that with a vocal performance that's vaguely punk. It's really a pretty cool vision--one that has very little in common with the FaLaLaLaFolderol we usually associate with the song. You can download "Deck The Halls" using the widget above, and vistit Napolean IIIrd on Facebook.

I never really understood "Walking In The Air" as a Christmas thing. I know, I know, it's a British thing and it's from some beloved cartoon. But let's face it, this is no "Christmas Time Is Here" and The Snowman is no Charlie Brown. "Walking In The Air" just doesn't have the proper festive spirit in my eyes. But Smerins Anti-Social Club has perked the song right the eff up with this horn driven Ska version and now I can dig it. This free download (via Bandcamp) from Smerins Anti-Social Club was the Christmas song of choice of BBC listeners who voted "Walking In The Air" as the holiday tune they most wanted Smerins Anti-Social Club to funk up. And clearly the listeners were right on. Now it's befitting of one of those there Heineken commercials. You know the ones. This is from 2010, so grab it before its gone. Norwegian producer and beatmaker Torkelsen is only 22 years old, but he's a master at what he does. Exhibit A: Listen to this complete transformation of Judy Garland's classic version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". You can keep up on Torkelsen's latest beats by following him at Facebook. Download "Christmas" using the widget above or via Soundcloud direct. 1. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas 2. Christmas Don't Be Late (Chipmunk Song) 3. Winter Wonderland Here's a three-song holiday EP from electronic Hip Hop duo Telephoned. The pair joined forces on a whim to re-imagine T-Pain's "Can't Believe It" and they've been together ever since, taking their name from the children's game of telephone (it's a party line, baby). Telephoned has built a reputation for turning out some of baddest club covers of the best that Hip Hop has to offer. And now that they've shifted their focus to Christmas music, things are never going to be the same. Download "A Very Telephoned Christmas" using the widget above or get the whole EP in one handy zip via Mediafire. Electro Pop artist TimPermanent has a sweet little cover of "Joy To The World" available as a free download in exchange for joining his mailing list. As nice as Tim's Christmas cover is, though, his original music is far more interesting. To me at least. TimPermanent's latest EP, "Resident", is newly released and that's where you get a taste of Tim's simple yet evocative lyrics and his music that ranges from moody to irresistibly danceable. To get your free download of "Joy To The World", join Tim's mailing list at either Facebook or ReverbNation. Although I have to tell you in all honesty that I tried the ReverbNation thing half a dozen times and couldn't get it to do anything but spin around. Just sayin'. Not Tim's fault. Spin happens. 25 year old Lloyd Polite, Jr.--who goes simply by "Lloyd"--is an R&B singer on the come. "Southside", Lloyd's solo debut in 2004 (following a stint with N-Toon) rose well up the Billboard charts. It didn't hurt that the single also featured Ashanti. Since signing with Interscope earlier this year, Lloyd has totally raised the ceiling, with the album "King of Hearts" doing very well since it's release late this summer and the lead single "Lay It Down" reaching the R&B Top Ten. Not to offend anyone on either side of the equation, but it's hard not to hear echoes of Michael Jackson when you listen to Lloyd's Christmas single, "She's All I Want For Christmas", which you can download freely, courtesy of OneShot Promotions. The guys in Oh, Hush! love the holidays and they can usually be counted on to provide some seasonal cheer. See that over to the right? That's my Oh, Hush! ornament/download card from 2008. Still hang it every year. This year's sugar rush of pop/rock Oh, Hush! Christmas goodness is called "All Your Love (For Christmas)". No sleigh bells and a bit of a poppy techno beat this year. Lots of energy. A double espresso of Christmas fun. Just what you need to get you through the next month and a half. I'd give you a direct link, but I think the way the band would like this to work is for you to sign up for their fan list. Then, hopefully, they'll direct you to, or email a link to, the song. As a fan, they'll also notify you of upcoming releases and there's usually a free download track every month (if memory serves...who are you again?). Anyway, give it a go and, if it doesn't work out that way, check back with me. |
