Matthew Mayfield is one of those artists you hear a lot on television shows. He's got that moody angst thing going and he's usually acoustic. Since he's gone solo, Matthew's taken a special shine to Christmas. Believe me, I'm not complaining. Matthew's "Maybe Next Christmas" EP was awesome. "It's Chistmastime Again" is even better. The use of sounds and instruments is incredible--he really paints a masterpiece that you can see and feel. The download also includes a surprise cover song--not a Christmas song, but a real treat nonetheless. And, no, I'm not going to be the one to spoil that surprise. Head to Matthew's web site or just submit your email using the widget above.

Anybody besides me remember The Krayolas? Back in the 70s, The Krayolas were hailed as the Tex-Mex Beatles. It's Root Rock meets Mexican border meats British Invasion. And if you think that sounds like a crazy stew, it is, but completely in a good way. The Krayolas have done three Christmas songs, so far as I know. The most recent was "Run Rudolph Run" which appears on the band's latest release, "Tipsy Topsy Turvy". "Christmas Time", as it happens, was a 1980 single release before appearing on the 2007 EP "Christmas Time And Other Cheer". "Tex-Mex Rudolph" was on that EP, too, though it's precise origin remains a mystery to me. Anyway, the important thing here is that The Krayolas are giving all three songs away as free downloads this year. It's a pretty good cross-section of Krayolas music, with my personal favorite being "Christmas Time". Head to The Krayolas web site and jump on these bad boys right away, lest they disappear up the chimney. I'm not big on the goofy. Goofy has a short shelf life. But sometimes something is actually pretty darn good and just sounds goofy. That's where I'd put this track from the inimitable Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. As one manufacturer of preserves says, "with a name like that, it has to be good". Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band are an Indiana trio specializing in country blues (their latest, "Peyton on Patton", is a tribute to old time Blues great Charlie Patton). Reverend Peyton plays the guitar, his wife Breezy handles the washboard, and Aaron "Cuz" Persinger is the drummer for the unconventional outfit. They're always knocking 'em dead with their live shows (over 250 dates a year) and their records are pretty popular as well. Lasy year, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band wrote and recorded a Christmas song to reflect these troubled times. "Plasma For Christmas" is just what you'd expect, subject wise. How else you gonna raise money to buy Christmas presents? But musically, the song's definitely a bit of a stroll off the beaten path. It has a bit of a stripped down Canned Heat feel to it, I think. And you know you want it for your mixtapes. So grab it while you still can using the widget above (remember it's from last year and could go away at any time) and stop by the Big Damn Band web site and say "howdy" sometime. |
