One of the things I love about The Yule Logs is they're not afraid to tackle Hanukkah tunes. And Lord knows the world needs more rockin' Hanukkah tunes. "Latke Man" is off the band's latest holiday collection "You Ruined Christmas" (album preview here) and it's FREE at Bandcamp. Ain't that nice? This has got sort of a Rolling Stones rhythm and attitude. So dig in and get you some potato pancakes, my brother, and you too can be a "Latke Man".

Free single from The Nostalgics of Harvard University. This ain't no Glee Club...at least I don't think it is. Hmmm. Anyway, "Christmas Is Cancelled" isn't the Long Blondes track from several years back, but rather a Northern Soul number. And there are certainly better tunes in the Retro Soul genre, but this one isn't bad. The female vocalist has talent and there be a horn section. And Daptone didn't release a single this year, so we'll take whatever fine soul comes along. Bame your price and download "Christmas Is Cancelled" at Bandcamp. Brooklyn's retro trio, The Bandana Splits, have covered Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" and you can download it free via Spinner. Nothing more need be said...except maybe Merry Christmas.
Stella Artois is a Belgian lager maker--in business since 1926. But, lately, they've been making music, too. Holiday music. If Heineken thinks those elaborate ads featuring the music of bands like The Asteroids Galaxy Tour and Mohammed Rafi are cool (and they truly are), Stella Artois seeks to go one step further by actually creating new music that has that swank retro cool. Last year, Stella Artois put out a beautiful version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" (sung in French, it's "Les 12 Jours de Noel") from Israeli singer Rosi Golan. It was really just an extended version of the music for their commercials, but someone over there thought it would be good promotion to make a free download available for the holiday season. Well, somebody give that man or woman a raise. The promotion was a huge success and brought tremendous attention and traffic to the Stella Artois web site. So this year, those little old beer makers have put together a full album of newly recorded ultra-cool 60s styled jazz. They brought together noted composers Gordon Minette, James Leibow, Andy Bloch and others, as well as arranger Dan Block. They used period recording equipment to keep it real and even meticulously crafted vintage cover art (which I'm told includes a vintage turntable and stylus carved out of ice). The full 8 song album "Under The Holiday Star" will be available for free download shortly (we'll let you know). But, just to wet your whistle a bit, Stella Artois has released the "Nutcracker March" in advance of the full set. Just head to the Stella Artois web site and enter your birthdate (it's alcohol, people) and then click to download. Hmmmmm. I love the taste of free holiday Jazz in the morning. Unfortunately, you can't download the Rosi Golan track anymore and it's not included on the album, but you can stream it on YouTube if you missed it last year. |
