But, really, what we're concerned with here is "Auld Lang Syne". And that one's free.
Canadian Karen Fowlie gives us one more free version of "Auld Lang Syne". Even at just over a minute, this is a sweet Alt Country toast to the old year. You can pick it up on Bandcamp. Karen also has a Christmas song, "Christmas Is Tomorrow", but that one's not free. It's also a bit more Indie Pop than Alt Country. "Christmas Is Tomorrow" can be purchased for $1 through Bandcamp. Or you can buy the four songs that make up "Single Releases" for $1.

More music from Seattle, here. Who knew there was such a thing as "electro country"? It's possible Brent Amaker & The Rodeo invented it. Regardless, this has got a terrific and unique sound and it's very likely to find a home on someone's mixtape next year, maybe nestled snuggly next to some of that spaghetti western holiday music moe was putting out a few years back. The band has a very cinematic sound and quality--bigger than life--and, not too long ago, they gained national notice for covering Kraftwerk's music. But "A Very Brent Amaker Christmas" is all theirs and you can download it free over at My Old Kentucky Blog. With Christmas almost upon us, I'd giddy up on over there. Jenny and Ashley Cooke are sisters, 16 and 14 respectively. They're also a hot new Country duo. Originally, they were each working solo in California, each writing their own songs. But the two caught the ear of some of Nashville's movers and shakers and the sisters were advised to work as a duo. Their debut EP, "Songs About You", hit the Internet sites in April of 2011 and they're poised for bigger things to come. Jenny & Ashley's Christmas single is "Winter Wonderland" and you can download it free if you "Like" their Facebook page. 1. Santa Clause Is Coming To The USA - The Kicks I'm not familiar with Brite Revolution, but it appears they're a magazine, no they're a free music download site, no they're a magazine--they're two mints in one! I don't think you have to sign up to download these particular songs, but, if nothing else, signing up ensures that they'll notify you when new music arrives. "The Winter Warm-Up Mixtape" is pretty cool--15 songs with a winter or Christmas theme. Outside of The Kopecky Family's "Our Remedy", I've not come across any of these elsewhere. The music ranges from Electro Pop to Indie Pop to good old Rock n Roll. The one bummer is that there doesn't seem to be any way to download all of the songs at once. I hate when that happens. So let me direct you to a couple that I think you should grab, whether or not you download the rest. Amy Stroup's "You Make The Cold Disappear" is a wonderful slice of Indie Pop. Jessica Campbell delivers a countrified "See Amid The Winter's Snow". I'm not entirely sure how I'd label Concerning Lions--Alt Rock? Folk Rock?--but whatever they're doing is mesmerizing. "River Carol" is the one song here that I simply cannot stop listening to. And, finally, you simply have to grab the rocker from The Kicks, "Santa Clause Is Coming To The USA". Everything else here is wonderful, too, but that's the cream that rose to the top of my coffee. Get a few or get em all at Brite Revolution.

Their styles range from straight up pop to straight up country. Ten Out Of Tenn still works and tours as a unit, I believe, and it's component parts work and tour separately. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the lineup has even changed since they released "Ten Out Of Tenn Christmas" back in 2008. The entire album is now available as a free download through Noisetrade. And, I'll tell you this, it's worth downloading for the Butterfly Boucher song alone. But this was really a pretty solid effort throughout. Don't know how long these Noisetrade deals last, so get it while you can. Up and coming Country singer Craig Campbell was born and raised in Georgia but now calls Nashville home. He describes his music as "traditional, back-to-basics, true country music". The video for the song features footage of American service members coming home from war, and a portion of proceeds from download sales will be donated to The Wounded Warrior Project. Now through Friday, though, you can grab the single free through Noisetrade. Of course, you're free to donate to Wounded Warrior on your own, or purchase "I'll Be Home For Christmas" from online retailers like Amazon if you prefer. The Noisetrade offer is only good through Friday, though, so giddyup on over there. To me, the single most remarkable thing about Tim McGraw is that his father was Mets bullpen ace Tug McGraw. The second most remarkable thing, to me, is that he's married to Faith Hill. But here's something else that's pretty remarkable. Tim McGraw has never officially released a Christmas song...up until this year. Oh, there is one out there, but it wasn't an official release. Near as I can tell, "Dear Santa" was recorded for the 2003 "Very Special Acoustic Christmas" but, for whatever reason, the song never made the set. It was "leaked" in 2004 and it's possible there was promotional distribution to radio stations and whatnot thereafter, but....not an official (and certainly not a commercial) release. And, to my knowledge, "Dear Santa" has still never been commercially available. Ever. (JC Penny comes up a lot in the searches, so perhaps there was a commercial tie in with them at some point; I'm happy to be corrected by anyone who knows the real story). It's a great song, too. Have a listen via YouTube. Of course, its hard to know what to believe since Tim just finished a lengthy battle to get away from his record label, Curb. And, now that he's on his own, the first thing Tim McGraw is doing...is giving away a Christmas song, an upbeat Pop Country tune. "Christmas All Over The World" can be yours for the price of an email address (hey, the man just lost the Curb mailing list after all). Head to Tim's web site or feel free to use the widget above. The Linedance Fever is a Swedish band that plays Country music from a Swedish perspective. TLF recently held a fan vote to determine which Christmas song they should cover and, after some spirited voting and a pretty decent horserace among four solid contenders, the fans picked Wham's "Last Christmas". When you think about it, "Last Christmas" became a popular Christmas "standard" because of the upbeat sway of the music featured on the original. And, when you think about, virtually every cover version (of the ten million versions) follows George Michael's lead. Slow it down or speed it up, it still has that happy dance floor sway. But it really is a sad song. Or should be. The Linedance Fever deliver the song with all the tears-in-your-beer pathos the lyrics would suggest. At least to start. They do manage to finish up in full hoedown style. The Linedance Fever is a band I'm inclined to hear more from. And this might be the best version (of the ten million versions) of "Last Christmas" that's ever been recorded. Yeah, I really believe that. Today, anyway. Ask me again tomorrow (when there will have been eleven million versions). Anyway, download this using the widget above or pay the band a visit at their web site. The Minor Planets are renowned Bluegrass musician Eric Christopher and renowned Americana vocalist Dana Thompson (plus a rotating assortment of Bluegrass, Country and Jazz musicians). Eric and Dana have worked together, off and on, for many years, though they each have other projects that keep them plenty busy. Together, their music has a sound that they describe as "soulful bluegrass...more inspired by the Walker Brothers than the Louvin Brothers." The Minor Planets are warming up to the release of the first Minor Planets album in more than 10 years; "Shadow In The Water" is slated for a January release. To chum the waters a bit, The Minor Planets have a two track holiday single that you can download for free through Bandcamp. They won't even ask you for an email address. Track one is "In The Bleak Midwinter", which sounds truly wonderful, and track two is "Holy, Holy, Holy". 1. All I Want For Christmas Is You 2. O Holy Night 3. Christmas Song (Walk Me Home) 4. It Won't Seem Like Christmas 5. Little Drummer Boy I'm glad Attwater decided to make their entire Christmas EP free through Noisetrade, because I like their sound and I think more people should take a listen. Call them Country or call them Americana, Attwater is all about Erika Attwater's voice and the songs she and Jonathan Richards write together. It doesn't hurt that their producer is Charlie Peacock (Civil Wars) who has helped give the band a fresh, cutting edge sound. My favorite on the Christmas EP is probably Attwater's version of The Raveonette's "Christmas Song". It's awesome! I love the sound on "It Won't Seem Like Christmas". And Erika's voice takes to "O Holy Night" like she was born to sing it. I did feel "Little Drummer Boy" was a bit superfluous, but I'm not complaining. And neither should you. It's free through Noisetrade. And, while you're listening to your free download, stop by Attwater's web site and read all about them. Maybe even pick up some more free downloads. You'd like that, wouldn't you? |
