Whoever Awwwwdiculous are, they seem to want to do the Hip Hop version of Rock Opera (they call it "Mob Opera"). Whatever. We're offering you up this "Winter EP" from January 2010 for the track "New Years (New Tears)" which is, if nothing else, an original take on the changing of the calendar, rather than just one more version of the usual suspects (not that we won't give you as many of those as we can find, too).

1. When The North Wind Blows 2. When Santa Comes 3. I Love Christmas And You Sure, it was cute when the Beatles recorded holiday messages every year from 1963 to 1969. But The Flashcats have been recording original Christmas music every year from 1981 to this one. That's 31 years of original Christmas music. 31 YEARS! Some of you haven't even been alive for that long. The Pittsburgh area band first came into a national spotlight when their Lou Bega take-off, "December Twenty 5", was included on the Rhino collection "Mambo Santa Mambo". Last year, the Flashcats released a 4-disc 100 song retrospective of their Christmas records (now sold out). So, this year, they're taking it a little easy and just doing the download thing. That's "free download" to you and me. The Flashcats Christmas music covers a lot of ground (obviously). The Pop Rock band has made Christmas songs in just about every musical genre possible. They've done the sweet, the funny, the good, bad, and ugly. And there have been a ton of topical tracks and song parodies. Now, if you're just now discovering the Flashcats, your collection is going to have some holes as a lot of their Christmas records have sold out. No worries on this year's though and, while you're at it, download Flashcats Christmas Record #28--"Wii Wish You A Merry Christmas"--also a free download. 1. Intro Story 2. Missile Toez 3. O! Bandrew is a group of musicians (and whoever is hanging out in the back alley behind the bar) from Oklahoma. And, it appears, they exist solely to gather before the holidays and take the most irreverent and twisted view of the holidays known to mankind--the only goal, seemingly, to be more irreverent than the year before. As each new volume is released, the last one disappears, never to be heard again. It's music. It's comedy. It's two mints in one. As usual, I haven't had time to listen to the whole thing. I will say, it IS funny...and not for the faint of heart, your local minister, or anyone in your family with evangelical tendencies. Did your Aunt Martha give money to Jim and Tammy Baker? Last week? Don't play this for her, then. I loved the opening story, the twisted "Baby It's Cold Outside" ("Baby It Chilly Out Dey") and the title track. And since those are the only three tracks I had a chance to sample, I'm giving "Kotton Kandy Kane" by Bandrew a big Stubby's thumbs up (though it's likely there's another finger that would be more appropriate). Visit Bandrew on Facebook. Or just hang out in the alley behind the bar and maybe you can be on next year's set.

Ellen Norton with the Evan Purcell band - Christmas Heart and Soul As long as we're on the subject of WFMU's Beware Of The Blog (see below), now might be a good time to bring this diamond in the rough to your attention. One of the many people I've come to know a little bit through this Christmas music obsession of mine is Dennis Flannigan. One December night in 2007, Dennis asked some musician friends to come into a recording studio for a night of song and story. But not just any old group of musicians. These three are legendary folk artists. Jim Page has been writing music since the late 60s and recording albums since at least 1975. You might be familiar with his songs "On The Street Again" or "Time Enough For Questions When The Killing's Done". Bryan Bowers is one of the world's best and best known autoharp players. He's probably best known for his 1980 cover of Mike Cross' "The Scotsman", which got a lot of play on The Dr. Demento Show. As a long time Mike Cross fan, that's basically how I first came to hear Bryan. I admit to being less familiar with Evan Purcell, though he's been a major force in the Pacific Northwest for nearly 30 years. Chuck Pennington did the graphics for the set, Tim (no last name given) was the recording engineer at ContactCreate studios, and Don Chapman and Videoland in Olympia, WA produced the discs which were only distributed to a handful of other obsessed Christmas music collectors. But a special thanks to Dennis for arranging and producing this evening of fun and festive frivolity, and for sharing it with the world as part of the 365 Day project--a Beware Of The Blog sub-project if you will (and even if you won't). There's plenty more holiday music to be plumbed from the archives of WFMU's Beware Of The Blog, but "Previously Unreleased" is one that you simply should not miss. And you can catch Dennis Flannigan on the Internet simulcast of his weekly radio show on KBRD at Noon (Pacific Standard Time) every Sunday. The Funny Music Project is the spot where many an aspiring Weird Al Yankovic put their latest wares on display for all the other aspiring Weird Al Yankovics to either admire or mock. After they've been up for a while, FuMP slaps a price tag on them. The best of them get collected up and pressed to CD for sale in the Funny Music Project web store. It's actually a lot better than it sounds. Anyway, I like to stop by once or twice a year to see if anyone is taking on the holidays. This year brought a double treat (think of it as a 2 sided holiday single). The Christmas side from The Camryn Manheim Steamroller is "Reindeer Direction" sung to the tune of Kermit The Frog's "Rainbow Connection". The Thanksgiving flip side is "Butterball", done to the tune of "Pinball Wizard". Stop by the Funny Music Project and download them both free. You should also be able to find them (as well as a few more I didn't think were as well done) at the Internet Archives--"Butterball" here and "Reindeer Direction" here. Sadly, there was no cover art, forcing me to create the image you see here. I hate when that happens. What are some of the worst things you can imagine? Gross things, scary things, sad things, yucky things. Make a list (check it twice). Now put it all to the tune of "Deck The Halls" and you have a soon to be anti-holiday classic. We've talked a bit about Massachusetts folkie Erin McKeown's unique take on the Christmas season, "F*#@ That". Erin is giving away a free download of one of the album's tracks (a clean one), so you can share in the fun. To get your download of "Fa La La La", enter your email address in the widget above and before you can say "What the--", a bright and shiny download link will appear in your email in-box. I'm not entirely sure people at your next Christmas party will be singing along to: "Noxious odors, Right Wing pundits, great white shark, homeless man" but it's worth a shot. The best part is when Erin switches things up and starts tossing in items from the "nice" list. Your brain experiences a bit of association whiplash--"Wait...is a 'pile of presents' a good thing or a bad one?" Oh, that Erin. She's such a kidder. |
