Different's good. I like different. So now for something completely different.... Collider. Collider is an experimental/drone outfit from the UK. I see they also say "Post Rock". No offense, but there is no such thing as Post Rock. Rock and Roll will never die. I have stacks of wax that tell me so. Be that as it may, Collider's cover of the Bing/Bowie duet "Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" takes a while to get going, but it's ultimately effective, due in no small part to the delivering of the Bowie part as spoken word. This is clearly not a Christmas cover for all occasions, but I can definitely think of occasions where it might offer just the right--slightly warped--touch. For such occasions, listen and download above, or head to Soundcloud where there is more music to be heard and had. To learn more about Collider, pay them a visit at their web site or Facebook.

The Death Bazooka - Wake Up (25.12.28) BFW is an eclectic Internet label. Largely known for some of the fine Ambient music they've released, everything in the BFW catalog is available for free download. Last year, BFW decided to do a Christmas album and it really was one of the unexpected treats of the year. So they decided to do one this year, as well. The 2011 collection is largely Ambient music, but not entirely. Magic Mountain's "Lantern Light", for example, provides a nice change of pace. As for my favorites, it's always nice to hear from the Bing Satellites and Cousin Silas' "Bight Star" is very pretty in a Vangelis-meets-Vince Guaraldi kind of way. But my absolute fave from the set, without question, is "Dance Of The Abandoned Snowman" which sounds completely Christmasy without any of the musical cliches. You can download this one direct from BFW or from the Internet Archives.
