Whoever Awwwwdiculous are, they seem to want to do the Hip Hop version of Rock Opera (they call it "Mob Opera"). Whatever. We're offering you up this "Winter EP" from January 2010 for the track "New Years (New Tears)" which is, if nothing else, an original take on the changing of the calendar, rather than just one more version of the usual suspects (not that we won't give you as many of those as we can find, too).

The First Noel DOWNLOAD FREE THROUGH NOISETRADE DOWNLOAD FREE THROUGH BANDCAMP Somehow, I seem to have missed Beta Radio on Boxing Day. Works out alright, though, as it gives me another "Auld Lang Syne" to point you to. Most of the covers of "Auld Lang Syne" are really short, but Beta Radio gives us nearly 3 and a half minutes worth. Really, though, the best tunes on this Indie Folk EP are "Oh Holy Night" and the title track, "The Songs The Season Brings". Download it for them and consider "Auld Lang Syne" a nice bonus.
Our first New Year's freebie in these waning days of 2011 is the collaborative effort of Frank Turner & Jon Snodgrass. Turner is a British artist who has done everything from Punk to Folk in his career. Snodgrass is an American Alt Country artist whose musical exploits have included stints with the groups Armchair Martian and Drag The River. Late in 2010, the pair got together to record the album "Buddies" in less than two days. Surely, they reasoned, they could write and record a New Year's song in under two hours. They actually accomplished the feat in under a half hour. So there. Head to The Ruckus to download "Happy New Year" for free. 1. Christmas Is For Our Hearts - Find Vienna 2. There was nothing from them last year and no label activity at all this year. DOWNLOAD AT FILTHY LITTLE ANGELS Out of the blue, and in honor of the label's 100th release, they've collected up all of their Christmas selections into one massive zip file. 96 festive favorites together for the first (and last) time, plus some bonus tracks. Just in case you were playing along all those years, each of the Christmas tunes (though not the bonus tracks) links up to its own mp3. If you're trying to figure the keepers here, my favorites were from SAY, Helen Love, And What Will Be Left Of Them, The Vichy Government, Hilary & the Democrats, Das Wunderlust, and Meg. I'd thought the Long Blondes were on one, too, but I'm not seeing them here (if you see them, grab em). Essentials are anything from SAY and "Have Yourself A Filthy Little Christmas" from And What Will Be Left Of Them. Might as well add The Vichy Government's cover of The Long Blondes "Christmas Is Cancelled" as well. And never let it be said that we left you with nothing to do after Christmas. This is very forward leaning stuff--some of it quite heavy. So, you know, not all of it is easily accessible to broad tastes. I tend to be drawn to pretty pop music, myself, so I can recommend The Sunturns, The Beards and The Honeytraps right off the top. I also really dug Nive Nielsen (we had them on Boxing Day) and was quite intrigued by Scarlet Chives (even if I didn't understand a word of it). Magnus was quite good with their electronic mashup. I'd like to listen to Therese Aune and Phaedra when more relaxed; Phaedra, in particular, seemed very pretty in a Pop Folk vein. And I loved Sassy Kraimspri's Rocked up "Santa Baby". That said, you can keep Deathcrush and their rendition of "Merry Christmas Baby", if that's what it was. Learn more about the bands, if you can read Norwegian, at the Alternativ Julekalendar website. Otherwise, you might be best off downloading your tracks from their Soundcloud platform.
Everything must go! Or something like that. Let's wrap up our mad dump of links to free Christmas music. Once again, there are a few things I want to spend a few more words on. For example, here's a wonderful collection from some North Carolina folks. Jim Brantley is apparently the front man for the group Bull City (its a Durham band, so...). Along with Heidi Brantley and some other friends and family, the Brantley Family Band turns in a new Christmas record every year. For we Internet types, that leads to a continually growing collection that, for 2011, has reached 36 tunes--all freely available from Bandcamp. I was skeptical at first, but everywhere I put the needle down (digitally speaking), I was amazed at the quality of the music here. This is some damn fine s#@t, right here. More than that, it's fun. Read more about the tradition here or here and download "The Brantley Family Band 2011 Xmas Album" free at Bandcamp. Appropriate to the date is this brand new track from our friends The New Standards, the Jazz trio from Minnesota. We had a look at their new Christmas album "Seven Songs of Comfort & Joy" earlier. For their holiday shows this year, the band wrote and performed a new song--"Christmas Next Year"--which was such a smash, they rushed back in the studio to record the track, which they finished on December 22 and which is now freely available through Bandcamp. This is a vocal number, more soul than Jazz, which The New Standards describe as "Springsteen meets Stax/Philly Soul meets Burt Bachrach." Now that we've got your attention, go get this cool Yule tune free and then have another listen to "Seven Songs of Comfort & Joy". In England, Australia, Canada and some other countries, the 26th is "Boxing Day". While experts may differ on the origins of "Boxing Day", I've always understood it (from afar) as a day of boxing up extra food and unwanted presents to give to those less fortunate. My sense of the thing comes more from the song "Good King Wenceslas" than any actual experience or knowledge, but that makes sense to me. Like everything else, Boxing Day is more of a bank holiday these days than anything else. So I see not the slightest disrespect in using this holiday as a way of dropping a lot of free download links we've accumulated that, for one reason or another, I haven't gotten around to writing up. These are all free and legal. Some of these links will take you to mediafire and like spots, but I've tracked them back and they're all artist approved. Some are new, some are from last year. Some are good, some are bad. Many I owe to the multitude of great Christmas web sites in our blog roll. Yule have to investigate yourself. But better I should give you the chance to do so while the links are still valid than wait so long that they've gone away. I do want to take some time--just a little--to mention a few collections in particular. Our friend Bob Portella of Christmas Chaos has assembled a collection of mostly original mostly off-beat holiday music from South Jersey bands. This is the kind of collection where even the stuff that isn't original is pretty original. "Snow On The Beach and Sand In The Pines" features a couple of tracks from the old Midnight Mess series that are making, so far as I know, their first legitimate appearance in the digital age (and, yes, Bob has all the necessary permissions). For that reason alone, you should download "Snow On The Beach and Sand In The Pines". Find the Mediafire link at the Christmas Chaos Facebook site. A group of musicians from Upstate New York have their own project--their second in fact. I'd like to have gotten this one up sooner, but it's 28 tracks. And you just can't drop 28 tracks on me a couple of days before Christmas and expect me to give it a fair hearing or type up a full track listing with artists. So I've sampled tiny bits and pieces and it sounds pretty darn good to me. Very loose and fun and irreverent. Musically sound. Definitely a PARENTAL ADVISORY is called for. You can get "A Super Gnarly Christmas, Volume Two" at the album's web page. Volume One, by the way, is also free (through Bandcamp). That one, I got to sample a wee bit more and I liked it even better. Here's a video from that one, "Everybody Shake Your Hands (It's Time For Christmas)". Think of it as the one song that would have made Stephen Colbert's Christmas album complete.
